Schick’s Nelson team have been working on the development of the Coastal View Retirement Village in Nelson since January 2020. As one of Questral’s ‘new generation retirement villages’, Coastal View is a unique community, combining the best of wellness, healthcare, and technology, to help retirees achieve both good health and happiness.

The scope of the work for the Coastal View project includes:

  • Earthworks
  • Drainage
  • Service Installation
  • Pavement

Stage three of the Coast View Retirement Village project is set to be complete in June 2022, with the start of the next stage following on from then. The strong relationship between Schick and Questral has been a large contributor to the great progress on the project.

Nestled on Nelson’s Tāhunanui Hills, the new retirement village overlooks Tasman Bay and Tāhunanui Beach. The location of the Coastal View site was chosen by Questral because of its ocean views and accessibility to Nelson’s city, beaches, and hospital.

However, the worksite has provided the Schick team with some challenges. For six years prior to Schick beginning work on this project, 600,000 cubic meters of soil was moved to level off the site. That is approximately 75,000 standard dump truck loads. Even so, building on a hill has meant our team has had to move a further 20,000 cubic meters of earth, and the installation of 7156 meters of pipeline, as well as large retaining walls on slopes has been challenging.

That is why over the course of this project, the Schick Nelson team has worked hard to create a local resource pool to complete the requirements of the project. The team has been specific in recruiting a resource pool to grow and up-skill further, with the intention of using it to continue building communities from the ground up in the wider Nelson Region.
